RAIL 1ST 6-11-16
I. When the OB and CB are both near a rail and also parallel to the rail, you are very limited as to moving the CB to get shape for your next ball. Or, maybe you cannot get a direct hit on the ball and must go rail first to pocket it. You typically want to do this when both the OB and CB are within 1" from the rail and the OB is within 1 diamond from the pocket.
Practice the mirror system to pocket this ball. This mirror system (angle of incidence equals angle of reflection) is based on a center ball hit with medium speed). Use this when you only need to pocket the ball. The next examples show how you can adjust this if you need to get shape on your next ball.
II. Combine hitting rail first with high and low to further your options for shape.
III. Safety Example #1: Hitting rail first allows the CB to come from a different angle therefore opening up other possibilities. For example, going rail first here allows you to skim off the very edge of the OB which makes the OB stay very close to where it lies and at the same time allowing the CB to gain distance.
IV. Surprisingly, if you hit this shot full with high and right it will hug the rail and go directly toward the 9-Ball. To get shape will ease, go rail first with right english. You will get shape as long as you hit the correct spot to pocket the ball and use a soft speed.
Mark Wilson's Coffee Stirrer Drill - 15 min - Place the CB on the head spot and the coffee stirrer on the footspot (aimed at the CB). First, practice rolling the CB directly into the front of the stirrer. Next, push the stirrer with the CB to the left by shooting just barely on the right side. Last, push the stirrer to the right.
Coffee Stirrer Drill with OB - 15 min - Set up everything as above and add an OB in the center of the table. Do the same exercise but now hitting the CB into the OB.
Elevated Stop Shot - 20 min - Place the CB 1/2 of a chalk's width from the rail. Place the OB 2 diamonds away in a straight line to a pocket. Shoot a stop shot using good fundamentals.
9-Ball Drill - 30 min - The video and diagrams are under "Advanced Course" on this website. Note your highest run within this 30 min.
Set up a money match with Walter Dorsey - race to 3 for $5 or $10- try to get the "wild" 5, 7 and breaks.
